What Reasons Are Women Smoking? The General Appeal
For many decades, dating back to the early 1920’s smoking had been considered an unthinkable thing to do in public if at all. In the days of yesteryear famous women smoking graced us with their presences on film, billboards and in popular magazines. Although smoking was still considered taboo within much of the public’s eye at the time, it had been introduced to the female population as a trendsetting and refined thing to do. Knowing this, why are the women of today’s society still smoking if health risks exist for themselves and others?
Many women often smoke socially and aren’t consciously aware of the peril that they are immersing themselves into. Women may choose to drink and smoke in different social settings, including a nightclub, bar and dance club. In recent years, many restaurants and other established businesses had reached the decision to completely prohibit smoking because more and more people have become aware of the dangers associated not only with the women smoking, but to those who are plagued with having to inhale second-hand cigarette smoke. Though we have examined women’s smoking as being a social and cultural norm, the fundamental reason one smokes is due to a stressful work environment and busy lifestyle. There are those of us who feel motivated with the daily stressors we encounter, while the rest of us do not respond well to life-altering changes and events. Quite a few of women who are smokers look forward to their cigarette breaks to ‘take a break’ from the daily conundrums they encounter in life.
Another reason we may find women smoking more than men is to attempt maintain their weight, as well as to lose weight. Society nowadays places a great deal of emphasis on how women are supposed to look and the majority of women who are slender are deemed to be the most attractive. It is a popular belief that smoking cigarettes works as an appetite suppressant because the taste buds and nasal passages over time develop impaired sensations in response to food.
There are still many more women who smoke to attempt to fill a void from the occasional sting of loneliness. While most human beings are magnanimously known for being social creatures, there are some women who are shy and may seek relief from engaging in a conversation by reaching for a cigarette. Somehow smoking a cigarette affords relief from social activities and the cigarette replaces the need for friendship for those who are extremely shy. Whatever the reasons have been for the number of women smoking, it is currently declining because of the awareness of gender-specific health risks.
